Tyneside Leukaemia Research Association

leukaemia research

The Tyneside Leukaemia Research Association is a registered charity founded in 1961 initially with donations given for research into children’s leukaemia. Over the years it has evolved into a network of branches covering Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, Durham, Teesside and Cumbria. The main aim is to support research into leukaemia and associated diseases for the benefit of all the people who live within the Northern Region of England.

This registered charity predominantly provides research funds for work being carried out via Newcastle University Medical School for clinical and laboratory research. The work funded is now nationally and internationally recognised as being of a very high standard. The Newcastle team has emerged as one of the most progressive and effective groups within the United Kingdom. Tremendous progress has been achieved, particularly in children’s leukaemia but much more effort is required for the more stubborn illnesses in young adults and older people.

how are funds raised?

Using our network of committed volunteers we organise fund-raising events across the region. Our events include: flag days, sponsored events, dances, parties, sales, coffee mornings, raffles and concerts.

We are delighted to assist anyone wishing to raise funds through sponsorship and in the past have benefited from sponsored runs, cycle rides, hair cuts, darts, coffee mornings, social evenings and dance marathons.

We are especially grateful for any legacies and the Tyneside Leukaemia Research Association is listed each year in the Law Society's Charity and Appeals Directory.

Much of our income is in the form of donations from charitable fund-raising organisations or simply from members of the public who wish to help.

Being an entirely voluntary organisation, with no paid staff, we have minimal administration expenditure. This allows all the money raised to be directed towards medical research into leukaemia and related diseases.
